Religion and Science
Historians of science and of religion, philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others from various geographical regions and cultures have addressed numerous aspects of the relationship between religion and science. Even though the ancient and medieval worlds did not have conceptions resembling the modern understandings of "science" or of "religion", certain elements of modern ideas on the subject recur throughout history. The pair-structured phrases "religion and science" and "science and religion" first emerged in the literature in the 19th century. Both science and religion are complex social and cultural endeavors that vary across cultures and change over time. Ancient pagan, Islamic, and Christian scholars pioneered individual elements of the scientific method. Roger Bacon , often credited with formalizing the scientific method, was a Franciscan friar.
The article published by Prof. Antonio Neviani in offered us an interesting opportunity to discuss about the teaching of human evolution in schools today. Already at the end of the nineteenth century, Neviani complained about the fact that the teaching of the theory of evolution was not present in schools. It is probable that in the history of scientific thought in the last two centuries, apart from the complex and unprecedented contemporary bioethical problems, no theory has been so charged with philosophical, theological and social implications that has so deeply divided the international scientific community as the evolutionary one 1. Together, and perhaps even more, of what has been a revolution from the scientific point of view, the Darwinian thesis has, in fact, modified the world view, including the position of man in nature, to an not inferior extent to what happened in the Copernican breakthrough. For many aspects, the impact of this theory is even more subversive than the Copernican revolution that dethroned Earth from its presumed centrality in the universe, because its consequences directly invest the dimension of time and space which, consequently, is relativised and subjected to mere rules of historical contingency.

Scientific and technological advances have had profound effects on human life. In the 19th century, most families could expect to lose one or more children to disease. Today, in the United States and other developed countries, the death of a child from disease is uncommon. Every day we rely on technologies made possible through the application of scientific knowledge and processes. The computers and cell phones which we use, the cars and airplanes in which we travel, the medicines that we take, and many of the foods that we eat were developed in part through insights obtained from scientific research.

The Compatibility of Science and Religion: Why the Warfare Thesis Is False
Even in the s, while I studied the history and sociology of science, this idea was still rare and limited to followers of counterculture and the New Age. How do we explain this new interest in dialogue? To answer this question, I went back to the source and retraced the long history of their conflicting relationship. Despite the recent trend of many historians of science who claim that these conflicts were not inevitable, it goes without saying that certain scientific theories are incompatible with certain religious beliefs based on a literal reading of texts considered sacred.
Scientific Approaches to the Philosophy of Religion pp Cite as. They argued that science and religion are in conflict, and that, if one holds to the one, one cannot hold to the other Draper, ; White, The name of Galileo came up frequently in these discussions, and it was pointed out that it was only to be expected that the Catholic Church would have shown such opposition to so distinguished and fertile-thinking a scientist. Naturally enough, the recently published theory of evolution of the English naturalist Charles Darwin was another topic of conversation by these conflict theorists. Again it was suggested that one is faced with a stark dichotomy: either one accepts that organisms had natural origins or one accepts that we all arrived supernaturally.
