Internal Combustion Engine Basics
Hello Readers In the last session, we had discussed SI Engines along with the working of the SI Engine and also derived the equations to calculate the efficiency of the Otto cycle whereas, in today's session, we will discuss the differences between SI Engine and CI Engine in a detailed way. Before diving into the differences, you need to know the basics of Spark-Ignition Engine and Compression Ignition Engine. In a four stroke engine, the cycle of operation is completed in four strokes of the piston or two revolutions of the crankshaft. Fuel is directly injected as droplets into Combustion Chamber passing through the fuel injectors. Later on, the injectors are been used in SI Engines because of the improper distribution of fuel by the carburetor at different speeds.

Difference Between SI Engine and CI Engine
Spark Ignition engine are those types of the engine where the combustion of the fuel occurs with the help of Spark Plug. In this type of engine, the Air-fuel mixture comes from the carburetor and enters the engine cylinder through the valves and then fuel is compressed in the compression stroke and finally, a spark is given by the spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture and we get power stroke. The engine where the rise in temperature and pressure during compression is sufficient to cause spontaneous ignition of the fuel. In this type of engine, only air is compressed in the engine cylinder after compression the temperature and pressure of the air are rising up and sufficient enough to burn the fuel sprayed by the fuel injectors. These are the difference between SI Engine and CI Engine if may read the difference between the Spark plug and Fuel injector , for more clear understanding.
Internal combustion engines provide outstanding drivability and durability, with more than million highway transportation vehicles in the United States relying on them. Along with gasoline or diesel, they can also utilize renewable or alternative fuels e. Combustion, also known as burning, is the basic chemical process of releasing energy from a fuel and air mixture. In an internal combustion engine ICE , the ignition and combustion of the fuel occurs within the engine itself. The engine then partially converts the energy from the combustion to work.
In SI engines petrol or gasoline is used as fuel, hence these engines are also called petrol engines. In CI engines diesel is used as fuel, hence they are also called diesel engines. Type of cycle used : In the case of SI engines, the Otto cycle is used.
