The Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties: The Canadian Drug Reference for Health Professionals , more commonly known by its abbreviation CPS , is a reference book that contains drug monographs and numerous features which help healthcare professionals prescribe and use drugs safely and appropriately. The CPhA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for pharmacists in Canada. CPS is also available online by subscription at www. Most of the drug monographs in CPS are provided by manufacturers, though numerous monographs—usually for drugs which are available as generic brands— are written by CPhA editorial staff and peer reviewed. A study was undertaken to determine the extent to which family physicians consult the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties CPS as an information resource for acute drug ingestions and to evaluate the scope and consistency of the informational content contained in the CPS Product monographs. Ninety percent of family physicians were found to consult the CPS as their first resource in a suspected acute drug ingestion. Although the CPS is a useful reference because of its universal distribution and annual updating, standardization of informational content and consistency between product monographs are necessary. Presently, major inconsistencies exist and some information is outdated. Full text is available as a scanned copy of the original print version.
