Joan Woodward September 27, — was a British professor in industrial sociology and organizational studies. Woodward was educated at Oxford University , where she gained a first in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in , followed by an MA in medieval philosophy from Durham University in , and a Diploma in Social and Public Administration from Oxford in Woodward was a leading academic and commentator in the field of Organization Theory , particularly Contingency Theory. Woodward was a pioneer for empirical research in organizational structures and author of analytical frameworks that establish the link between technology and production systems and their role in shaping effective organizational structures. She classified the technology into Unit based or Small scale , Mass based or large scale and Continuous process organizations.

Woodward’s aegis: a critical biography of Joan Woodward

This paper aims to offer a critical biography of Joan Woodward, often considered the founder of contingency theory. This paper draws on insights gained from personal correspondence with two colleagues of Woodward, one who recruited her to the Imperial College where she conducted her most prominent work and one whom she recruited while at the college. The originality of this work is to examine the work of Woodward through the lens of critical biography. Woodward, Joan (1916–1971)

A British professor of industrial sociology who led the South-East Essex research team in a survey of manufacturing organizations in that area during the s. Her many publications included The Dock Worker , The Saleswoman ; an early and neglected study of service workers , and the influential Industrial Organisation: Theory and Practice Woodward argued that differences in the organization of work and in behaviour at work the number of levels of management, area of responsibilities of supervisors, division of functions among specialists, clarity with which roles and duties are defined, amount of written communication, and such like could usually be traced to the immediate work situation itself. In particular, in the Essex survey, differences in technology accounted for many of the differences in organizational structure. She produced a widely discussed typology of production systems, distinguished according to their degree of technical complexity, ranging from unit and small-batch production, through large-batch and mass production, to the most complex form of process production. Often accused unjustly of technological determinism, Woodward's work was instrumental in setting new standards of empirical research in the sociology of organizations, and in demonstrating the possibilities of systematic comparison as against the hitherto predominant isolated case-study.
