Animal Behaviour Psychobiology Ethology by David Mcfarland

Ethology is the scientific and objective study of animal behaviour , usually with a focus on behaviour under natural conditions, and viewing behaviour as an evolutionarily adaptive trait. Ethology has its scientific roots in the work of Charles Darwin — and of American and German ornithologists of the late 19th and early 20th century, [ citation needed ] including Charles O. Whitman , Oskar Heinroth — , and Wallace Craig. The modern discipline of ethology is generally considered to have begun during the s with the work of Dutch biologist Nikolaas Tinbergen — and of Austrian biologists Konrad Lorenz and Karl von Frisch — , the three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Ethologists typically show interest in a behavioural process rather than in a particular animal group, [4] and often study one type of behaviour, such as aggression , in a number of unrelated species. Ethology is a rapidly growing field. Since the dawn of the 21st century researchers have re-examined and reached new conclusions in many aspects of animal communication , emotions , culture , learning and sexuality that the scientific community long thought it understood.

The third edition of Animal Behaviour continues to provide a balanced and integrated introductory treatment of the entire domain of animal behaviour for Biology and Psychology students. The text assumes no previous knowledge and has been designed to guide new students with a diversity of backgrounds through a logical sequence of study to a full understanding of complex behavioural patterns. Organised in three main sections; evolutionary explanations for behaviour, mechanisms of behaviour, complex behaviour patterns. Preface to the Third Edition.

This text is the first to provide a coherent theoretical treatment of the flourishing new field of developmental psychobiology which has arisen in recent years on the crest of exciting advances in evolutionary biology, developmental neuroscience, and dynamic systems theory. Michel and Moore, two of the field's key pioneers and researchers, integrate primary source information from research in both biological and psychological disciplines in a clear account of the frontier of biopsychological investigation and theorizing. Explicitly conceptual and historical, the first three chapters set the stage for a clear understanding of the field and its research, with particular attention to the nature-nurture question. The next three chapters each provide information about a basic subfield in biology genetics, evolution, embryology that is particularly relevant for developmental studies of behavior. These are followed by extended treatments of three spheres of inquiry behavioral embryology, cognitive neuroscience, animal behavior in terms of how a successful interdisciplinary approach to behavioral development might look.
